Expertise
in Geotechnical Engineering
and Landform Design

McKenna Geotechnical is a Canadian engineering and consulting firm specializing in mining geotechnique, landform design, and mine reclamation. The firm develops mine closure plans, landform and watershed designs, and technical guidance documents. We provide expert consulting engineering and geotechnical review services for mines in Canada and abroad. We also offer courses for practitioners and students on landform designs and closure planning.

Coffee played a larger role than usual recently at the University of Alberta, where Professor Nick Beier and Adjunct Professor Gord McKenna worked with research associate Ahlam Abdulnabi and co-op student Abby Paul in the laboratory from March 2 to 6 to perform a unique geotechnical “drip-coffee” experiment.

During a lecture at the University of Alberta, Gord McKenna introduced a new pamphlet on landform design. “An Introduction to Landform Design: Building mining landscapes with flair” acknowledges that mining “drastically disturbs the land” and provides a high-level overview of how landform design — done properly — can help industry, regulators, and communities to work together to successfully reclaim mine-disturbed land.
